Ludicrous Heat

It's been ridiculously hot the past few days, with triple digit temperatures even in the shade. On the tennis court, beneath the midday (and afternoon) sun, it's easily ten degrees hotter still. My summer tennis teams are literally melting.

The boys slogged through yesterday's matches. Two of the younger ones had to retire in order to stave off heat exhaustion. A couple more felt sick. The soles of one boy's shoes started melting, a victim of the temperature and friction. My one defiantly triumphant player walked off the court with legs covered in white salt, evidence of the extent of his dehydration (despite the three bottles of water he drank during the match).

We've already cancelled today's matches, because it's insanity to continue to play under these conditions. And this is only the first week of summer tennis. I have seven more to look forward to. I hope it cools off at least a little bit, otherwise it's going to be a very difficult summer.
